Perhaps one of the greatest examples of legendary medieval swords is King Arthur’s very own Excalibur. Excalibur was probably patterned after the longsword which was quite popular during the time. The longsword was notable for its cruciform hilt which was useful for grasping the sword with two hands. The name derives from the fact that some models of this double-edged, straight blade could reach the length of more than 35 inches or over 90 centimeters. During the early part of the medieval period, a longsword could weigh as much as 4½ pounds or roughly 2 kilograms, minus the scabbard and the belt. Blades were also rather thick and preferably, diamond shaped in circumference.

 

This is to ensure maximum damage during combat. A longsword was used primarily as a stabbing weapon. The thick blades ensured that enough harm could be incurred during the actual thrust and withdrawal of the weapon. However, in order for the sword to actually penetrate through the opponent’s armor, the swordsman must ensure that he or she has a strong enough grip on the blade and a powerful upward thrust as well.

 

Another example of a medieval sword is the greatsword. Like a longsword, this too was a double edged, straight blade with a handle long enough for two handed handling. Although its blade was shorter in length than the longsword, the greatsword pretty much made up in the actual diameter and size of the blade. This weapon was primarily a hacking tool that can get through armors in a hurry. However, it takes a very powerful swordsman to wield such a heavy weapon. Some greatswords are known to weigh as much as 6 to 8 pounds.
